"In Our Bones" is an inspiring tale of a young woman with a deadly bone marrow disease who decides to try to find a donor match by going on a road trip around America with her sister and best friend. Her crusade to find a hero for herself and for other patients needing transplants forces her to confront her mortality, uncover her ​family's ​​secrets, and get out of the passenger seat of her own life.

When Sam Kimura was diagnosed with rare and deadly bone marrow failure disease called Severe Aplastic Anemia, she was told she would need a bone marrow transplant to cure her. Unfortunately, like thousands of other patients fighting blood cancer and diseases like leukemia and lymphoma, Sam doesn't have a match on the donor registry.

With the hopes of finding heroes for everyone in need, and to give Sam a bucket list adventure with whatever time she has left, Sam, her big sister Alex, and her best friend Taylor started the Sharing America's Marrow (SAM) campaign.
In 2015, the three young women set out on a year long road trip around the United States, hosting donor registration and educational events in all 50 states to try to dispel the negative misconceptions about bone marrow donation and save lives.

"In Our Bones" gives an intimate look inside the ups and downs of this once in a lifetime adventure, filmed by the girls themselves as they drive around the country, struggling to find what they are looking for.

In addition to raising awareness about this important cause, this feature length film serves as a visual memoir of Sam's personal journey, with a story that proves there is much more than marrow In Our Bones.

Infused with humor and charm, her crusade for herself and for other patients needing transplants forces her to confront her mortality, uncover family secrets and get out of the passenger seat of her own life.
Crowded together in the their vamped-up SUV for 24,000 miles, and hosting hundreds of bone marrow drives as they pursue their mission to turn adversity into a meaningful adventure, the girls experience moments of sheer beauty and wonder, generosity, compassion, exhilaration, depression, desperation, and overwhelming exhaustion. The strains on friendship and siblinghood bringing them to the edge and back again, their story is a testament to loyalty, trust, love, and commitment to something greater than themselves."

SAVE A LIFE
It's very rare to be a match, but if you are, you might be the one person in the world that could save that person's life. About 80% of donations are blood stem cell collections done through a blood donation similar to donating plasma or platelets. If bone marrow is collected, the donor is under anesthesia.
